The important difference is the payment route
When a customer is ready to pay, you may encounter a scan-to-pay flow or a till-number flow. They are not the same thing simply because both result in money being sent to the business.
The practical lesson for a merchant is to recognise the route being used and follow the correct payment flow rather than mixing the two.
Scan to Pay
A scan-based payment starts with the customer using the scan option and the payment information presented for that transaction. The merchant's job is to make sure the payment is associated with the correct sale before treating the transaction as complete.
Do not rely only on a customer saying, “I have paid.” Check the payment confirmation available to you before handing over the goods.
Your Till Number
A till-number payment uses the business's till number as the payment identifier. This is useful when the customer is paying through a number rather than a scan.
Again, the key is confirmation. The till number identifies where the payment should go; it does not replace checking that the payment itself has been completed.
Do not confuse the two
A busy shop is exactly where payment mistakes become easier to make. A merchant may hear a customer mention a till number while expecting a scan, or see a payment notification without immediately connecting it to the correct sale.
Keep the process simple: identify the payment route, make sure the customer is paying the correct business, confirm the payment, and then complete the sale.
Why this matters for your records
Good payment discipline is also good record discipline. Each sale should be connected to the correct payment so that your records remain useful when you review the day's transactions.
Knomart's merchant-side money movement is designed around this kind of operational clarity: the payment should make sense not only at the counter, but also when the business looks back at its records.
Scan or till number, the rule is the same: know the route and confirm the payment. A few seconds of verification can prevent a much bigger reconciliation problem later.
