A Partner can work with many businesses, but not every business represents the same level of ongoing activity. Some merchants may remain on the Free tier, while others actively pay for Knomart. For Partner rank, that difference matters.
Rank Should Reflect Real Activity
Knomart Partner ranks are intended to show the scale of a Partner operation that is serving active paying merchants. The current thresholds are 50 paying merchants for Silver, 200 for Gold and 500 for Platinum.
If free merchants counted in the same way, a Partner could build a large list without creating the recurring merchant activity that the rank is meant to represent. The ranking would then say less about the strength of the actual business.
Free Merchants Still Have Value
Not counting a free merchant toward rank does not make that merchant irrelevant. A free merchant can remain part of a Partner's pipeline and may later move to a paid plan. The Partner can continue building the relationship and helping the business understand when a paid plan is appropriate.
The distinction is simply between pipeline value and rank value. A free merchant may be an opportunity for future conversion, but it does not yet demonstrate active paid demand.
Why the Rule Protects the Meaning of Rank
Good ranking systems need a clear signal. By counting active paying merchants, Knomart makes Partner rank harder to inflate and easier to interpret.
It also keeps the Partner focused on the quality of the merchant book. Signing businesses is only part of the work. Helping merchants adopt Knomart, remain active and find enough value to continue paying is what creates lasting scale.
Rank Can Move
Because only active paying merchants count, rank is not simply a trophy earned once. If the number of active paying merchants falls, the merchant base supporting a Partner's rank can fall too.
That creates a useful discipline: build relationships, create real merchant value, and retain active paying businesses.
The principle is straightforward. Partner rank should describe the business that is actually operating—not the size of a contact list.
