What It Costs to Run a Car Wash in Nairobi in 2026

Water, labour, rent and consumables all move. Here is how to work out what a wash really costs you before you set a price.

Most car wash owners can tell you what they charge. Far fewer can tell you what a single wash costs them to deliver — and that gap is where the margin quietly disappears.

Count every line, not just the obvious ones

A wash consumes more than water and time. Work through the list honestly:

  • Water — metered supply, bowser deliveries, or both when supply is unreliable
  • Labour — wages, and whether washers are paid per vehicle or per day
  • Consumables — shampoo, tyre shine, polish, microfibre cloths, sponges
  • Power — the pressure washer and vacuum, which are rarely metered separately
  • Rent and levies — the yard, county permits, waste-water handling
  • Wear — pumps, hoses and lances that need replacing on a schedule

Work out your cost per wash

Take one full month. Add every cost above. Divide by the number of vehicles washed in that month. That figure — not your price list — is the number that decides whether the business works.

Do this for a busy month and a quiet month. Fixed costs like rent do not shrink when the yard is empty, so a quiet month raises your cost per wash sharply. If your price only covers cost in a busy month, the business is fragile.

Where the money usually leaks

Three leaks show up again and again.

Consumables that nobody counts. Shampoo used with a heavy hand costs the same as shampoo used carefully, but only one of them was budgeted.

Water bought twice. Yards that supplement mains supply with deliveries often price against the mains rate and absorb the delivery cost silently.

Free extras. A quick interior vacuum thrown in to keep a regular happy is labour time you priced at zero.

Price from cost, then check against the market

Start from your own cost per wash, add the margin the business needs to survive a quiet month, and only then compare with what the yard down the road charges. If the market price sits below your cost, the answer is not a lower price — it is a lower cost or a different service mix.

You cannot manage what you do not record

All of this depends on knowing how many vehicles you washed and what you spent. A yard that records every wash and every purchase can answer these questions in minutes. One that relies on memory is guessing, and guessing is expensive.
